The evangelism dilemma

Greenwashing is a term used to describe the practice of companies disingenuously spinning their products and policies as environmentally friendly, such as by presenting cost cuts as reductions in use of resources. It is a deceptive use of green PR or green marketing.

Says Wikipedia. Within the green movement, there are roughly two stances towards greenwashing.

One group says greenwashing is a bad thing. The green movement is only getting started and fragile. All disingenuous green claims (greenwashed claims) are a direct attack on the credibility of the green movement and should thus be exposed.

The other says greenwashing is a good thing. Of course, it is better to only have green products and not turn to greenwashing. On the other hand, even greenwashed products add to awareness of the green movements and its objectives. Eventually, even the greenwashing companies will have to turn to green-green products.

And there starts my evangelism dilemma. Should I support initiatives that aren’t necessarily 100% the way it should be, but add to awareness for the good cause? Or should I support only the *real* initiatives?

Now social media.

Yes, there is so much evangelism of social media, online media and conversatio to be done. But should I really support initiatives that promote social media for the sake of social media?
